Eurekans

Please add into your diaries that the Eureka AGM will be held at Pax Hill on Sunday February 8, 2015, with the usual chance to have a stroll in the bush  from 11am, BBQ from 12 noon and Meeting from 1pm.

2015 is the year where we intend solidifying our position as the pre-eminent Club in presenting major events, so we need an active body of people contributing in all ways to the organisation and management of Eureka Orienteers.  Don’t be shy in presenting your name for any of the executive positions or for specialist work for the Australian Champs or anything else.

We could still do with a few additional volunteers for Sat Dec 27 at Mt Beckworth.  I am counting on those of you who have entered to be able to assist either before or after, but a few more during the event would be appreciated.  Please let me know if you can assist.

Regards,

Mark Valentine

Media Release – Approved for Publication
aMAZEing Ballarat - 2014 Cheque Handover to Balladonors
Mark Valentine, Chairman of Eureka Orienteers, made an appropriate style presentation of a cheque for $1200 to Ian Rossiter, Team Captain for Relay for Life Cancer Council Group, the Balladonors, by hopping on a unicycle, which was one of the challenges faced by competitors in this year’s aMAZEing Ballarat. The event has now been running annually for eight years and is a fun, charity event organised by Eureka Orienteers where competitors have to solve a clue sheet before heading off to various location points around the city, where they may have to find some information or complete a team challenge. This year the unicycle activity forced team members to work cooperatively to keep one member upright, while amongst many other activities teams had to learn a Tai Chi routine, attempt to play the bagpipes and search a large homewares store to find the price of a mystery object. 75 competitors in 22 teams, including one team from Norway who have been visiting Melbourne for a range of other orienteering events, took part in the fun which used the Eastwood Leisure Centre as the base for the start, finish and presentations. The event takes place on the first Saturday in December each year with details promoted on the Eureka Orienteers website, www.eurekaorienteers.asn.au.

Update – Full Report

8th Annual aMAZEing Ballarat

Saturday dawned a little overcast but the spirits were high as the 22 teams assembled at the Eastwood Leisure Complex ready to tackle the 8th aMAZEing Ballarat.

All teams now understand that a little time spent on preparation at the beginning can have major benefits later in the four hour event, so the first half hour was taken up with frantic phone calls, the tapping of keys on phones and ipads and a good deal of the usual head-scratching, as the participants tried to make sense of the clue sheet and be certain that they had the right locations.

Team Albacutya took preparations to a new high point this year spending over 90 minutes, but it paid dividends for them with a first place in Class C at the end.

Multiple past winners The Magpies were quickly into stride but were facing stiff opposition this year from the Pink Tutus who had speed as their major weapon and Noah’s Champions who had a breadth of local knowledge to carry them through.

This year teams had to plot a course which brought them back to the start area during the event where they were challenged with a Tai Chi routine. This proved to be something of a leveller for many front running teams as they took a little while to grasp the fact that it is better to be slow and methodical to achieve success.

Other challenges involved bagpipes, unicycling, golf ball drop into a narrow pipe, memorizing a tray of objects after a 10 second glance and the observation test on photographs around the city. As well competitors went to the Combined Charities Christmas Card Shop to purchase some cards and donated a packet of shortbread to the local charity Breezeway.

All in all there were 18 various tasks for the teams to perform and when the results came in there were 6 teams who had managed to get to all the points and had to be separated by numbers of correct photos or memorized items.

The unique categories devised by Mark and Blake on the day made sure that the coveted mugs were spread though out the entrants.

The major recipient of the funds this year was again Balladonors who through various events over the year raise money for the Relay for Life Organisation. Eureka Orienteers will be able to present them with a cheque for over $1000 later this week.

A World Championship in the Sprint for Jenny Bourne!

Hi all

If you somehow missed the results of the World Championships Sprint in Brazil – Jenny (W60) has won her first World Championships Sprint. But wait there may be more… Saturday is the final of the World Championships Long Distance. Jenny and husband Geoff (M55) are both in the top 5 in the two qualifying races so a medal for both is not out of the question. So put 2014 World Orienteering Championships, Brazil, Results into your search engine and watch early on Sunday.

Closer to home Monica, Declan and Blake are off to the 2014 Victorian MTO Champs at Eldorado and Stanley tomorrow. After the Vic Sprint Champs (set by Blake) last Saturday both Monica (W40-) and Declan (M-16) claimed top spot in their age classes. Dale (W70-) beat her Kiwi friend Yett, Mark Valentine celebrated riding in M60- with a strong 2nd and Tony Keeble took a well deserved 3rd in M40-. Our up and coming juniors – Harrison Keeble (M-14) and Geordie Dickson (M-12) came within 1 control of winning their classes – but they did not punch the last control before the finish. Bad luck fellows – better luck next time.

So watch the Brazil website for the Lawfords heroics – and Eventor for the Eureka mtbo assault at the northeast.

Cheers

Blake

A gold medal by almost a minute to Jenny Bourne in W60 and 4th to Ted van Geldermalsen M60 were the top Victorian results in the Sprint Distance in Brazil. This is another remarkable achievement by Jenny to be the best in the world in her age class to add to her previous World Masters Championships in 1993, 1994, 2000, 2009 & 2010. Other A final results included 7th to Geoff Lawford (M55), 13th to Blair Trewin (M40) and 21st for Simon Rouse (M35). You can follow the Long Distance races this week at http://wmoc2014.org.br. Members

Last chance to register your interest with me in being in a team for the 2014 Vic Relays to be staged at Choke Em Gully near Chewton.  I will be entering teams on Friday as I will be on leave after that.  No need to respond if you already have done so, but there are a couple of regulars who have not done so as yet.
