The first event of our Ballarat Map Run series (formerly our BUNS Series) will be held this Sunday 6 January, brought to you by Geoff.

The venue is Victoria Park and the start time is 5pm. We will meet at the North end of the Park, just off Sturt St, near the toilet block. Look for the Eureka banner.

The format will be the same as previously- 20 checkpoints to visit in 45 mins, 10 points per checkpoint, 10 penalty points deducted for each minute or part thereof you are late returning.

We have, however, moved to using the Maprun smartphone application. For those of you unfamiliar with this technology, your smartphone is used to record your visits to the checkpoints and for timing. No markers are placed at the checkpoints. Instead your phone will beep and buzz when you reach the location, confirming that you are at the correct place. The map, showing the checkpoints will show on your phone but we will also provide a paper copy of the map and course. An advantage of using this technology is that, since no markers are put out,  the course can remain open for an extended period. So if you are unable to come at 5pm on Sunday, it is possible to still do the course at some other time that suits you.

You need to download the MapRun app before the event (or come to the event early and get some assistance with this).

So, before reading on, grab your smartphone and install the Maprun app from the Apple Store or Google Play! You will be asked to enter your basic personal details when you first run the app.

More details about when the event is open/ map will be available/event name etc will be sent out soon.

We hope to make the event a social occasion too so have chosen a venue with a BBQ nearby, hoping people will be able to stay after their run and have a picnic dinner.

So we hope to see you on Sunday at 5pm. Meanwhile download the app,  charge your phone and grab some snags for the barbie.

(If you have any questions about the app and how it all works, email Ian Chennell ian@chennell.com    He’ll be able to help!)

See you then

Jenny
