Hi Everyone
So we are officially out of winter – but it is never over until it’s over! Watching the rain and the winds blow today from in front of the wood stove, I hope September and October come good (as they did back in 2015 when Eureka hosted the Australian Champs in Ballarat). * Welcome home Rod and Aislinn from exciting trips to the USA and Switzerland respectfully. If you missed the efforts of our “fab two” – Rod teamed up with Geoff L to become 2023 World Rogaining Champs in the Ultra AND Super Vets class in the open pine forests north of Lake Tahoe in Nevada. Aislinn represented Aus in the Women’s Relay in what looked like spectacular, steep and challenging Swiss terrain (ask her if she heard “The Sound of Music” while on her course!) * 2023 Vic Champs at Mt Alexander a windfall for Eureka. Podium finishes on the Middle and Long courses were crowed with Eureka runners with Gary, Rod, Aislinn, Judy, Dale, Harriet, Blake, Chris and new member Susan Waters claiming top three finishes (with pots of honey for the 1st placers!). It was a particularly beautiful weekend – welcoming in Spring at the other side of Mt Alexander centred on the old koala park campground. * Victorian Teachers Games in Traralgon on Sunday 17th Sept . Led by Mark, with help from Rod, Gary, BJ and Blake, Eureka will stage another fascinating aMAZEing event for 65 teams in Gippsland. This is one of our icon events having staged several in Ballarat, two in Geelong and now the first of two in Gippsland. The teachers really get into the spirit of the mental and physical challenge of this popular fixture – and the organisers love the smiles and good fun of staging this annual event for such an appreciative cohort. * Mt Lofty 2023 State Series Final. – this Sunday just west of Redesdale. Several Eureka members could be on the podium at the end of this day. Top ten positions are currently held by Aislinn, Roch, Judy, Ruby, Harriet, Dale, Blake, Gary, Terry, Saoirse, and Ciara – so hope for more good 😊 smiles at the finish on Sunday! * Australian Champs in WA. Aislinn, Roch and Judy will ‘fly the flag’ over in WA. Watch for their results as they try to avoid stepping on the flowers in the colourful WA bush in late September and early October. * Yuille Wetlands event – rescheduled to 8th October – will our first challenge of fourth term. Ian has set a great set of courses up, down and across the Yarrowee River that all members should try to get to – assembly area at the east end of Vickers Street. It is a beaut piece of bush land right in Sebastopol so come and try it. * Lake Daylesford – rescheduled to 15th October – will round out our October efforts now that the “Borealis sound and light show” has taken away all the black plastic, generators, wires, and towers from the south end of the lake. Sarah, Bill and Toby have up an event unlike the OGP – but with a bit of climb on the top 2 courses!
In October and November the MTBO season will be wrapping up with the ACT Champs in mid-October in Canberra, the two-day Vic Series in Beechworth/Stanley and the final Vic MTBO Series at Linton – staged by Yarra Valley from the Linton PS.
So lots to look forward to at this end of the orienteering season – get out and enjoy it!
Cheers Blake
